Pope Francis has issued his first Apostolic Exhortation (An apostolic exhortation is a type of communication from the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. It encourages a community of people to undertake a particular activity but does not define Church doctrine. It is considered lower in formal authority than a papal encyclical, but higher than other ecclesiastical letters, Encyclicals, Apostolic Letters and Other Papal Writings.) Called “Evangelii Gaudium,” (the Joy of the Gospel). The document offers the Roman Catholic Church a road map of sorts for navigating the complexities of the modern world, with the Gospel as a compass for what the pope called “a new phase of evangelization, one marked by enthusiasm and vitality.”
